Whims Merino By Furls Yarn Review

Hello! I love trying out and finding new yarn to love and use to design with. That is one of the wonderful things about yarn, there are so many to choose from and now we have another option! Furls has just released their own yarn that is specifically made for crocheters and I am floored!

Furls is a wonderful company that is known for their extremely exquisite and beautiful, hand carved wooden crochet hooks. Some of the other things that they make are gorgeous yarn bowls, displays, cases, handbags and jewelry. Now they have released their own yarn, Whims Merino and I am so lucky that the generous people at Furls have sent me each of the 4 colors to unbox and review for ya'll. If you would like to watch my unboxing video, click here.

Each skein of Whims Merino comes packaged in a pretty little black bag. I think this is a lovely idea and who doesn't love having extra bags around?

There are 4 different colors to choose from and then there is also an undyed yarn option as well. How cool is that?

The first color way that I pulled out was the purple. It's not too dark and I think the purple has undertones of blue which makes it a very pretty shade of purple. This is my favorite kind of purple and I love it!

Light grey is the next color way that I pulled out and I am in love with it. It is a very soft, subtle grey. It is so light that it is almost white which totally reminds me of winter.

The third color way that I pulled out was the blue. It is a very bright blue that borderlines teal. In some lights it looks very bright, blue bird blue but in others it looks a little darker, like almost a teal blue and I think it is a beautiful color.

The last color way that I unboxed was the red. It is a beautiful dark red that is not too dark but is not too bright either. I absolutely love it.

I love all four of the color ways and I think they are all very saturated, beautiful colors. The colors are vibrant but not too "in your face" in my opinion. They are very pretty and wearable colors.

Each skein of Whims Merino has 196 yards (180 meters) and is 3.5 oz or 100 grams. The yarn is 50% superwash merino wool and 50% nylon and is a light 3 weight yarn.

This yarn is specially made for crocheters because it has a z twist instead of an s twist. This means that the yarn is wound in the opposite direction of most yarns. After researching yarn for 2 years, Furls figured out that the s twist causes the yarn to slowly deply which means the yarn strands separate. The z twist helps the yarn maintain it's ply and firmness, which improves stitch definition, drape and structure. To read more behind the z twist, click here.

The blue color way struck a cord with my heart and that is the yarn that I decided to test out. I wound the yarn into a cake with my yarn winder and yarn swift. It was very easy to see where the yarn was tied together and then winding it into a cake was a piece of cake.

I could tell this yarn was soft when I handled the skein but wow, working with Whims Merino is amazing. It is so, so soft and it glides effortlessly over my hook. It was very relaxing and wonderful to crochet with, plus I noticed that I was crocheting even faster than normal. I tried several different stitches, the double crochet, star stitch, half double crochet and single crochet. Each stitch was just as easy to crochet and I didn't fumble or split the yarn, not once. The blue worked up beautifully and I realized that it has a little sheen to it too. I have a special design in mind for this yarn and now I can't wait to get started on it.
