Knit Imposter Crochet Beanie

Hello! I have a confession to make. Even though I am a crocheter and I love, love, love to crochet, I started out knitting because I liked the look of knitting better, but I do not love to knit. I found out
that knitting hurts my hands, wrists and arms whereas crochet does not, at least on most days. So, I have always loved the look of knitting and I've tried to learn how to make crochet look like knitting. There are several ways to accomplish this but I think this is one my favorite ways! I love the texture of this hat and I think it does a really great job at tricking the eye into believing that this is a knit hat. I have even figured out how to be able to flip the brim up and keep the same texture! I love it and I hope ya'll do too! Scroll down for the free pattern for the Knit Imposter Beanie. Video tutorial coming next week!

We have been suffering through a really cold spell this week and I wanted a hat that was very comfy but also very warm. I love how it turned out!

- Red Heart Soft Yarn (2 skeins) or medium 4 weight yarn
- Scissors
- Darning needle
- Stitch marker is optional but helpful
- Yarn pom pom or furry pom pom (click here for a video tutorial on how to make a yarn pom pom from a store bought maker and a homemade maker)

Gauge

6.5 hdc and 9.5 rows = 2 inches

Abbreviations and Tips

ch: chain
hdc: half double crochet
BLO: back loop only

3rd front loop only:

If you look at the top of the next stitch, you will see a v at the top. That is the front loop and back loop.

If you tilt your work and look at the front, you will see another bar. This is the 3rd front loop.

This pattern is worked in rows with a right side and a wrong side.

Approximate Rectangle Dimensions:

Adult small: 19.5 x 11.5
Adult medium: 20.5 x 11.5
Adult large: 21.5 x 11.5

If you would like a slouchier hat, chain more.
If you would like a smaller hat, chain to desired height and crochet the rectangle till it is the desired length.

The brim of the hat is 14 stitches. I like to use a stitch marker to mark where the brim ends and the hat begins so that I do not have to count stitches every row. If you would rather count stitches, do not use a stitch marker.

THE PATTERN

R1: ch 57, put a hdc into the 3rd ch from the hook and in each ch across. =55

R2: ch 2 (does not count as a stitch here and throughout the pattern), turn your work, hdc BLO next 14 stitches, hdc 3rd front loop next 41 stitches. =55 (WS)

R3: ch 2, turn your work, hdc BLO next 41 stitches, hdc 3rd front loop next 14 stitches. =55 (RS)

R4-R65 (R67, R69): Repeat R2 and R3 until it measures 19.5 inches (20.5 inches, 21.5 inches) or until desired length and make sure you end on a R3 repeat. Do not cut the yarn.

SEAMING

Fold in half so that the right side is on the outside of the hat,

R1: ch 1, insert the hook into the stitch directly across from the last stitch (on the opposite side of the rectangle),

insert the hook into the BLO of the last stitch and make a slip stitch.

Repeat this for the next 13 stitches and then instead of inserting the hook into the BLO, insert it into the 3rd front loop and slip stitch the rest of the way across. (This keeps the texture the same.) =55

Cut the yarn leaving a tail long enough to sew the top of the hat closed.

CLOSING THE TOP

With a darning needle and the tail end of the yarn, whip stitch through the loops at the top of the hat, pulling on the tail end as you go, all the way around. If the hole is still not completely closed, thread the yarn through a few stitches around the hole and pull tight. Knot off the yarn but do not cut it if you would like to add a pom pom.

ADD A POM POM

Using the tail end of the leftover yarn, sew on the pom pom, cut the yarn and weave in all ends.

Fold the brim up and you are ready to wear this super comfy and warm hat!

THE END!
