Tunisian Brioche Tutorial And Free Square Pattern

Hello! Brioche is a form of knitting that creates a raised and interesting texture, but this look can be mimicked with Tunisian Crochet. This technique is fun, easy and the texture is absolutely beautiful! Scroll down for the tutorial and free square pattern.

Brioche creates a beautiful texture that can be personalized by color. One color or two and more colors can be used with this technique and the different looks are endless.

Learn how to Tunisian Brioche with the video tutorial below and after practicing, come back and try out the free square pattern below. One and two color versions are available.

TOOL NEEDED

A Tunisian Crochet hook is recommended but you can practice this stitch and make this pattern using a crochet hook that does not have a handle.

YARN

I used Universal Yarn Deluxe Bulky Superwash Yarn in Smoke Heather and Classic Pink for the tutorial and Smoke Heather and Pulp, for the pattern because I love the stitch definition that this yarn creates. I also love the gray and pink colorways, especially.

Universal Yarn Deluxe Bulky Superwash Yarn is a bulky weight yarn made from 100% superwash wool.

For the tutorial, if following along, you can use any weight yarn that you would like, just make sure to use the appropriate size crochet hook.

For the square pattern, If substituting yarn, try to find a yarn that is similar is weight and fiber content so that gauge can easily be met.

Disclaimer: Universal Yarn did offer yarn support for these tutorials and the link is an affiliate link. This means I may make a smaller percentage if a purchase is made after clicking on one of my links. This does not change the price for the purchaser.

  • sl st: slip stitch
  • tks: tunisian knit stitch
  • tss: tunisian simple stitch
  • twss: tunisian twisted simple stitch

Notes

  • If making the two color version: do not forget to carry the yarn when appropriate. I like to carry the yarn every 4-5 stitches.
  • This pattern can be worked with a regular hook that has no handle.
  • This pattern is worked flat with the right side of the work facing.
  • Do not turn your work at the beginning of each row. Each row is worked from right to left (forward pass) and then from left to right
  • At the beginning of each row, the first stitch is on the hook and counts as a Tunisian knit stitch.
  • When carrying the yarn, try to keep it loose.
  • Can use other weight yarns but the size of the square will be different.

How To Work Into The Last Stitch Of The Row:

1. Tilt the work toward you and look for the last 2 vertical bars at the end of the row. (image 1)
2. Insert the hook under these last 2 vertical bars. (image 2)
3. Yarn over, (image 3)
4. and pull up a loop. (image 4)
