Hello! It's almost the end of the year and I have one more crochet pattern to share with ya'll! If you have been following me, you will know that I have been on a huge Tunisian crochet kick lately. I just can not put down my Tunisian crochet hooks! This design uses color work to create a beautiful fade that is fun and easy to crochet! I love Tunisian crochet because it mimics knitted fabric but it can also mimic fair isle and intarsia too! Fair isle and intarsia can be used to create beautiful scenes, pictures, mosaics and even words. When I first fell in love with Tunisian crochet, I designed the I Wish It Would Snowflake Hat and then I designed the Rainy Spring Beanie, which was featured and the cover photo of Happily Hooked Magazine's May 2017 issue. The Faded Tunisian Beanie is a wonderfully great beginner project for those that have done Tunisian crochet before and are ready to try color changing. This hat creates a beautiful transition that fades from one color to another. I think this hat would look so pretty in just about any 2 colors and I can't wait to see what ya'll come up with!
The stitches used in this hat makes it very squishy, soft and warm! It's a very cozy hat to wear and I had a lot of fun modeling photos while my kiddo took the photos. It was a very cold day but that hat kept me very warm!
I added a fluffy faux fur pom pom to my hat and I think it totally completes the look! I just love a big, fluffy pom pom! This beautiful pom is by Maria's Blue Crayon on Etsy.
Notes, Tips and Tutorials
- This pattern is worked best with at least a 10 inch tunisian crochet hook, but 14 inch is easier to use on the larger sizes. A Tunisian hook with a cord attached can also be used for the larger sizes.
- This pattern is worked flat with the right side of the work facing.
- At the beginning of each row, the first stitch is on the hook and counts as a tunisian knit stitch.
- Do not turn your work at the beginning of each row. Each row is worked from right to left (forward pass) and then from left to right (return pass).
- For a slouchy hat, add about 2 inches of rows at the specified point.
- Circumference of the hat will be smaller after it is seamed.
- There is a gauge for this hat but there are also measurements throughout the pattern.
- To finish this hat, you will close the hole at the top of the hat and then seam up the back.

Working Into The Back Humps Of The Chains:
Row 1 says to work into the back humps of each chain. Look at your chain and tilt it toward you and look at the back of the chain. There are humps along the back of each chain. Insert your hook into the back hump.
Tension For Correct Gauge:
I make my loops almost 1/2 an inch tall. My tension is not very tight because I like the loops to easily slide up and down the hook.
How To Do The Mattress Seam:
Cut a new piece of yarn the same color as the main color, long enough to seam the back of the hat. Use the mattress stitch to seam up the back of the hat.
Using a darning needle, thread the yarn through the bottom corner of the hat and then thread the yarn through the opposite bottom corner leaving the yarn loose. Switching back to the other side, pull the end row of stitches away to reveal a horizontal bar next to the first stitch. Thread the yarn through the horizontal bar loosely. On the opposite side, pull the end row of stitches away to reveal a horizontal bar next to the stitch and thread the yarn through it loosely. Keep repeating, back and forth, until you reach the top of the hat. Pick up both ends of the yarn and lightly pull on the ends until the seam closes up. Weave in the ends. Image is below.

With Size H crochet hook and ca, ch 82. Switch to Size I tunisian crochet hook.
R1: Forward pass: Insert hook into the 2nd ch from the hook, yo and draw up a loop. *Insert the hook into the next ch, yo and draw up a loop; repeat from * until the end of the foundation ch. =82 loops
Return pass: yo and draw through the first loop on the hook. *yo and draw through the next 2 loops on the hook; repeat from * until 1 loop remains on the hook.
R2: Forward pass: 2 tks (the first stitch is on the hook and counts as a tks), *tps, tks. Repeat from * across. =82 loops
Return pass: yo and draw through the first loop on the hook. *yo and draw through the next 2 loops on the hook; repeat from * until 1 loop remains on the hook.
R3-R8: Repeat R2
*should measure approximately 20.5” long.
R9: Forward pass: tks across. =82 loops

R32: Forward pass: tks with cb, tks2tog with cb, *tks2tog with cb. Repeat from * across until 1 st remains. tks with cb. =10 loops
Return pass: yo and draw through the first loop on the hook. *yo and draw through the next 2 loops on the hook, repeat from * until 1 loop remains on the hook.
Finishing
with cb:
Round 1: *Insert the hook into the next vertical bar, yo and draw through both loops on the hook; repeat from the * across. =9
*should measure approximately 9” tall.
Cut the yarn and pull the yarn through the last stitch. Use a yarn needle to thread the yarn through the 9 stitches and pull tight.
Use the mattress stitch to seam up the back. See the notes section for a picture tutorial.
Fasten off and weave in all ends.
Add a pom pom if you would like.
