How To Dye Speckled Yarn With Easter Egg Dye

Hello! It's spring and Easter is coming up so stores have all kinds of Easter stuff out right now. I decided to take advantage of that fact and pick up some Easter Egg kits to dye some yarn! I have dyed yarn with Kool-Aid, with a Tie Dye kit, Wilton's food coloring, I've even experimented with dying yarn with plants but I've never dyed yarn with an Easter Egg dye kit, so I thought it would be a lot of fun to try! For the video tutorial and the written instructions, scroll down.

This method of dying yarn with Easter Egg dye is fun and easy and the results can be very different depending on how much dye you use and how many colors you decide to use. Today I dyed 2 different kinds of yarn. The first one, I used multiple colors on white yarn and it turned out so pretty and I loved the technique so much that I decided to dye purple speckles on a yarn that I had dyed pink previously. The pink yarn was an experiment that I posted on my facebook and instagram. The yarn didn't turn out anything like I expected, instead of a rainbow of colors, it turned pinks! Pretty and surprising conclusion, but I decided to add purple speckles to it as well to make it more interesting.

This technique of dying speckled yarn is a lot of fun and I encourage ya'll to give it a try! I love how my yarn turned out and I can't wait to crochet with it.

How To Dye Speckled Yarn With Easter Egg Dye

- Yarn made from at least 75% animal fiber. (I used 50 grams of white 100% wool yarn and I also used 100 grams of previously dyed pink 100% wool yarn.)
- A bowl of water or multiple bowls of water if you do not have running water nearby.
- A fork
- Easter egg dye pellets that have been crushed up. (I put mine in a piece of folded parchment paper and then I crushed them with a hammer.)
- 2 tablespoons of white vinegar
- 5 cups of water
- Good quality plastic wrap
- Dish detergent
- Optional: Gloves

In a bowl, add 5 cups of water and 2 tablespoons of white vinegar. Stir.

Soak the yarn in the water and vinegar for at least 30 mins or overnight.

Lay out plastic wrap on a clean work surface.

Remove the yarn from the water and vinegar and gently squeeze out the excess water.
Do not wring out the yarn, you do not want it to felt and get fuzzy.

Lay the yarn out on the plastic wrap.

Take the fork, dip it in the bowl of water, then dip it in the crushed powder and start applying it to the yarn. After each color, make sure to rinse the fork so you do not mix the colors.

After the first side is finished, flip the yarn over and apply dye to that side.

Pull the yarn apart and check your work. Add more dye if needed.

Fold the plastic wrap over the yarn and roll the yarn into a ball.

Microwave on high in 1-2 minute intervals until the yarn is hot to the touch. (I microwaved mine twice for 2 minutes each.)

Let the yarn cool, (I waited about 1.5 hours.) Microwave on high in 1-2 minute intervals until the yarn is hot to the touch. (Again I microwaved mine twice for 2 minutes each.)

Let the yarn cool completely. (I waited several hours.) Unwrap the yarn and gently wash it in
luke-warm water with some dish soap until the water runs clear.

Gently squeeze out the excess water with your hands or lay the yarn in a folded towel and press out the excess water. (This is the method that I used.)

Hang the yarn to dry for 24 hours or until the yarn is completely dry. (I hang mine on the rack that I hang my clothes that can't be dried with a towel under it to catch any excess water that may drip.)

Wind the yarn into a cake and start crocheting or knitting with your beautiful speckled yarn!

I hope ya'll love this tutorial and if you dye your own speckled yarn with Easter Egg dye, please let me see! Post pictures to my facebook page or tag me on instagram @_with_alex
