Beginner Tunisian Beanie Free Crochet Pattern And Tutorial!

Hello! Tunisian Crochet has been a love of mine for several years now. I first fell in love with Tunisian crochet because of it's ability to mimic knitting and I was in love with the intarsia/fair isle look. I designed and released the I Wish It Would Snowflake Hat and then I released the Rainy Spring Beanie which was first published in and the cover of Happily Hooked Magazine's May 2017 issue. These are now free patterns on my website. Now I have designed a new beanie that I think is perfect for the Tunisian crochet beginner. Scroll down for the free pattern and video tutorial, that includes 6 sizes from micro preemie through adult! And if you are new to tunisian crochet, you can read my new article, Tunisian Crochet Guide: 5 Things You Need To Know, which is on allfreecrochet.com.

I love how Tunisian crochet mimics that beautiful knitted look. I've always been fascinated with knitting, but even though I tried it first and completed several projects, I am not a knitter. Crochet comes more naturally to me and for me, it does not put as much pain, tension and stress on my wrists, elbows and shoulders as knitting does. Tunisian crochet uses a hook to combine knitting with crochet to produce a fabric that looks knitted or woven. Tunisian crochet can be very meditative and relaxing and because of this and the fabric it produces, I absolutely love Tunisian crochet.

If you would like more information on beginning Tunisian crochet, read my article, Tunisian Crochet Guide: 5 Things You Need To Know, that I wrote for allfreecrochet.com. This is my very first informational article that I have written for an outside website and I am so excited and thrilled to share it with ya'll! I hope it helps you get started with Tunisian crochet and I hope ya'll fall as madly in love with it as I have.

GIVEAWAY!

I also have a giveaway going on right now to win a set of Clover Interchangeable Tunisian Crochet Hooks! Go to my instagram and look for the photo below, to enter!

The Beginner Tunisian Beanie was designed in collaboration with allfreecrochet.com and I think it really is the perfect project for beginners! This unisex, simple, Tunisian beanie is a great pattern for beginners and makes a great gift because it is comfortable and warm.. The body of this beanie has a simple but beautiful and squishy knitted texture and the brim has a simple ribbed design.

I made my beanie with Red Heart Soft yarn, and it is a squishy, soft hat.

I love that it is a simple beanie but you can totally dress it up with a fake faux fur or yarn pom pom.

This pattern has 6 sizes including micro preemie, preemie, 0-3 months, 12-24 months, child/teen and adult. So, you should be able to make this hat for about anyone!

Notes, Tips and Tutorials

  • This pattern is worked best with at least a 10 inch tunisian crochet hook, but 14 inch is easier to use on the larger sizes. A Tunisian hook with a cord attached can also be used for the larger sizes.
  • This pattern is worked flat with the right side of the work facing.
  • At the beginning of each row, the first stitch is on the hook and counts as a tunisian knit stitch.
  • Do not turn your work at the beginning of each row. Each row is worked from right to left (forward pass) and then from left to right (return pass).
  • For a slouchy hat, add about 2 inches of rows at the specified point.
  • Circumference of the hat will be smaller after it is seamed. See the sizing guide for more information.
  • There is a gauge for this hat but there are also measurements throughout the pattern.
  • To finish this hat, you will close the hole at the top of the hat and then seam up the back.
  • There is a video tutorial for this pattern and all sizes: Beginner Tunisian Beanie Video Tutorial
If you are new to Tunisian Crochet and would like a quick beginner guide as a reference and help, read my, Tunisian Crochet Guide: 5 Things You Need To Know, which is published on the allfreecrochet website. I also have video tutorials, those links are below.

Working Into The Back Humps Of The Chains

Row 1 says to work into the back humps of each chain. Look at your chain and tilt it toward you and look at the back of the chain. There are humps along the back of each chain. Insert your hook into the back hump.

Tension For Correct Gauge

I make my loops almost 1/2 an inch tall. My tension is not very tight because I like the loops to easily slide up and down the hook.

How To Work Into The Last Stitch Of Each Row

When you have 1 stitch remaining,

tilt the work a little and insert the hook under the last 2 vertical bars at the end of the row.

Yarn over and pull through the stitch to pull up a loop. (image 1 and 2)

How To Do The Mattress Seam

Cut a new piece of yarn the same color as the main color, long enough to seam the back of the hat. Use the mattress stitch to seam up the back of the hat.
Using a darning needle, thread the yarn through the bottom corner of the hat and then thread the yarn through the opposite bottom corner leaving the yarn loose. Switching back to the other side, pull the end row of stitches away to reveal a horizontal bar next to the first stitch. Thread the yarn through the horizontal bar loosely. On the opposite side, pull the end row of stitches away to reveal a horizontal bar next to the stitch and thread the yarn through it loosely. Keep repeating, back and forth, until you reach the top of the hat. Pick up both ends of the yarn and lightly pull on the ends until the seam closes up. Weave in the ends.

Finishing

Round 1: *Insert the hook between the front and back vertical bars of the next stitch, yo and draw through both loops on the hook; repeat from the * across. =9 sts
Should measure approximately 8.5” tall.

Cut the yarn and pull the yarn through the last stitch. Use a yarn needle to thread the yarn through the 9 stitches and pull tight to close the hole. Use the mattress stitch or preferred method to seam up the back. See the notes section for a picture tutorial of the mattress seam.
Fasten off and weave in all ends.
